Using AI Tools in Real World Management Consulting
My friend Chris Parente has posted a very useful slide deck on LInkedin in his article Tactical AI Tips for B2G. His discussion is insightful and reflects some of what I have also learned while working as an independent consultant with clients, many of whom target tech- and data-related services to municipal, state, and Federal agencies.
In my work, I have used tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude to assist with a variety of tasks, including text editing, market research, content analysis and classification, data cleanup and formatting, data analysis and visualization, image generation, and even detailed project planning. Additionally, the ability to upload datasets and documents for analysis and processing has been an incredible time-saver.
I have two major takeaways from this experience:
First, as an independent consultant, I believe these tools have made me more productive when working with clients than in the past. I find that I can reach “the next step” more easily and quickly.
Second, I am reminded of the importance of incorporating context and experience—not only in crafting prompts but also in interpreting the implications and potential shortcomings of the generated output.
I like to think that several decades of experience in research, project management, and consulting have helped me use these tools more effectively and efficiently.
I have also learned that, when working with sophisticated professionals in software development, data analytics, and system transformation, I need to remain vigilant when using AI tools so as to ensure, for example, that technical details are accurate. This involves close collaboration with the client (always a good thing!)
That should not be a surprising realization, even when the speed and sophistication of these tools may make them seem more creative and intelligent than they might be.
