How Did House Atreides Make Its Money Before Arrakis?

I'm a frequent user of AI tools in my work; see Using AI Tools in Real World Management Consulting.

Recently I had a very interesting experience with ChatGPT (I'm a Plus subscriber).

I asked the following question: "Before House Atreides relocated to Arrakis, how did it make its money?" This is how ChatGPT responded:

Before House Atreides was assigned to govern Arrakis, its wealth primarily came from its control of Caladan, a lush, oceanic planet. The Atreides derived their income from several sources:

  • Agriculture & Fisheries - Caladan's rich natural environment made it a major producer of food, particularly seafood and grain. The House exported these resources to other planets, ensuring a steady revenue stream.

  • Trade & Commerce - House Atreides engaged in interstellar trade, leveraging its reputation for honor and reliability to establish profitable commercial relationships.

  • Military Contracts & Services - The Atreides were known for their skilled military forces, including elite soldiers like the Sardaukar-trained Atreides troops and the loyal Fedaykin. Their military prowess and training capabilities likely provided financial benefits through alliances and contracts.

  • Feudal Holdings & Political Alliances - As a noble house within the Landsraad, House Atreides had access to wealth and privileges granted by its standing among the Great Houses. This included stipends, political favors, and strategic marriages that strengthened its financial base.

Despite its economic success, House Atreides was far less wealthy than its rival, House Harkonnen, which had controlled Arrakis and profited immensely from spice production. Their move to Arrakis was both a potential financial windfall and a deadly political trap set by the Emperor and the Harkonnens.

I asked CLAUDE and PERPLEXITY tha same question and received simlar responses -- but without ChatGPT's reference to "Sardaukar-trained Atreides troops."

Watch out, folks.
