Trigger's "PROMARE" (anime)

Trigger's "PROMARE" (anime)

Review by Dennis D. McDonald

When watching this frenetic and cacophonous anime adventure it’s tempting to ask the question, “What the heck is going on now?”

If you do pay attention the constant dialoguing of the protagonists and the excellent English subtitles will get you through a VERY convoluted plot despite the near insanity of the graphics.

Plus, near the end we approach another end-of-the-world scenario with Japanese anime’s comfort-food trademark: giant robots destructively fighting it out with force fields, death rays, and huge energy pulsing swords that in the process lay waste to another Japanese city.

The sound, editing, color, and character design, coupled with the excellent voice actors’ over-the-top histrionics, all play out a constantly fresh visual tapestry with unique animation style (which is reminiscent of Trigger’s Kill La Kill).

I can understand why someone more attuned to traditional storytelling styles and animation might be put off by all this and by the rather formulaic songs and music interspersed throughout. But I certainly enjoyed it and think others will too.
