Avatar: The Way of Water
Only in theaters
Saw this in the theater in 3D and intend to see it again. Amazing! Not a dull moment! I was skeptical going in but Cameron knows what he’s doing and I actually look forward to the sequels. (Don’t tell anyone but I may actually buy the Blu-Ray — and I rarely if ever buy physical media anymore.)

Ever since singing “Sweet Rosy O’Grady” in a grade school “Irish Minstrel” musical review I’ve been smitten with Hollywoodish Irish culture especially my dad’s favorite movie THE QUIET MAN. BANSHEES is an amazing dramatic adult film but not for everyone. It’s immersive, emotional, scary at times, and positively gorgeous to look at, but not in a cloying or condescending way. I think Colin Farrell deserves a best actor award; I can’t believe he was also the Penguin in THE BATMAN! My full review of BANSHEES is here.

I’m not a big Elvis fan but must admit that I loved his movies when I was a kid. My dad managed a neighborhood theater on weekends and I got to see everything for free — and popcorn was free! My favorite Elvis movies were COUNTRY FAIR, VIVA LAS VEGAS, and FOLLOW THAT DREAM. I know now they were junk but my memories are pleasant.

OK, I admit I’ve had a crush on Michelle Yeoh ever since I made my co-workers go with me to see CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON when it opened in Brooklyn many years ago. The Michelle Yeoh we get in EVERYTHING is not the confident martial arts expert we’ve grown to know and love, and I admit that took some getting used to. Her character here is weighed down by mediocrity and day to day worries and it takes her forever to break out in this weird tale involving dimension-shifting multiverse confusion, laundromat management, and tax woes. A secret: I actually bought the Blu-Ray of this one! It may not be the best multiverse sci-fi taale availabe but I give it MAJOR credit for spectacular outrageousness. Extra points for Jamie Lee Curtis’s IRS agent, too.
