Roar Uthaug’s TOMB RAIDER

Roar Uthaug’s TOMB RAIDER

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

TOMB RAIDER is an excellent adventure film. It’s reminiscent of Indiana Jones films in terms of story elements but what holds it all together is Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.

Vikander projects equal portions of calm, intensity, and athleticism. She more than holds her own against larger, bulkier, and male foes who consistently underestimate her fierce and cunning tenacity.

The film also boasts world class action sequences that deserve the adjective “pulse-pounding” starting with an incredible bicycle (yes, bicycle) chase through London streets.

The editing of this and other action sequences is nearly flawless and is matched by a pounding soundtrack that reinforces the action. If you have seen the same director’s THE WAVE you will know what I’m referring to. This guy really knows how to assemble an action film!

Still, it’s Vikander that carries the film. Her character may be super competent and quick thinking but, at the end of the day, she’s also down-to-earth and relatable -- and she’s able to absorb a lot of physical punishment.

Time will tell but I sense a possible Clarice Starling or Ellen Ripley in the making here.

I would definitely like to see a sequel!
