When I was a kid I believed I had a personal guardian angel who watched over me and kept me safe. Seeing INK reminded me of my guardian angel days as it explores the conflict between good and evil and the shadowy netherworld of dreams, nightmares, and overlapping timelines.
The battle portrayed is over the fate of an eight year old girl. She lives with her grandparents. Her workaholic father lost custody of the girl to them after the death of her mother.
Both “angels” and “devils” pop in and out of the “real-world” and battle over custody of the girl. Intertwined with all of this is the father’s own personal journey involving anger, guilt, selfishness, and remorse.
What’s impressive about this movie is how incredibly creative its entirety of editing, photography, set design, acting, and costumes are, despite an independent filmmaker’s meager resources. Even the special effects blend splendidly with the at times frenetic action.
A surprisingly large cast courses through the story as we gradually learn what’s going on.
Despite all the creative production details, though, this is a story about characters.
