I Bought a Magazine Today!

I Bought a Magazine Today!

By Dennis D. McDonald

I know, I’ve criticized magazines before as vestiges of an old fashioned past, but I confess: I bought one today.

I was at the Borders in Tysons Corner waiting for a friend to show up in the coffee shop. I remembered that one of my recently-heard podcasts, the BBC History Magazine, had mentioned that its paper edition was sold at Borders in the U.S.

Sure enough, I found a copy on the “newsstand” and plunked down my $8.25 (cover price). A bit steep, I thought, but I haven’t bought a magazine at a newsstand in years.

What a neat publication! It’s beautifully designed, the variety of stories is terrific, writing is excellent, and for a history buff like me, it’s just what the doctor ordered.

I wonder if there are any magazines like this published about U.S. history? How about magazines about South American history published in English?
