Guilty As Charged: I Am A Facebook "User"

By Dennis D. McDonald

According to statistics released recently by Facebook, I am a Facebook "user" which is defined as follows:

Facebook defines a monthly active user as a registered Facebook user who logged in and visited Facebook through its website or a mobile device, or used its messenger app, in the past 30 days.

I guess that makes me a "user." After years of avoidance I recently created another Facebook page so I can post comments on websites that only allow comments by Facebook users. Thankfully such sites are few and far between but I do occasionally add links on my Facebook page to new blog posts in order to maintain a minimal level of activity. I also accept "friend" requests from people I know since I don't want to appear to be "unsociable."

Still, I'm not sure I'll really become active again on Facebook. I already use Google+, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Flickr, plus a variety of other social and web properties for communicating, publishing, and information seeking. I also read the digital and dead tree editions of the Washington Post every day while eking out time for book reading, movie reviewing, and media interaction.

How will Facebook fit into all this? I'm not really sure.
