Nina Paley's SITA SINGS THE BLUES

Nina Paley's SITA SINGS THE BLUES

Review by Dennis D. McDonald

I was mesmerized and entertained by this animated film. Paley intertwines the classic Ramayana with a modern love story, old blues songs, and lively comments on Indian culture by talking shadow puppets.

The animation is bright, creative, and funny. Plus we get an intermission that allows the story’s main characters to buy popcorn and go to the bathroom.

It’s long but pay attention to how the words of the songs are blended with the story and the chraracters’ feelings and emotional states. Very clever!
