Akiva Goldsman's WINTER'S TALE

Movie review by Dennis D. McDonald

I knew little about this movie or the book it’s based on when I watched the Blu-ray release recently. I also knew nothing about how it had bombed at the box office and it’s almost universal panning by critics.

Jessica Brown Findlay

I love this movie. I’m a sucker for well done but romantic time travel films. This one compares favorably to the romantic classic Somewhere In Time. The production values are terrific. So are the performances.

Colin Farrell and Jennifer Connelly

I’m especially impressed with Colin Farrell; some of the best work he’s done. For example, the “interview” scene between him and William Hurt’s character is a small gem, but there are many like this.

I like the liberal sprinkling of fantasy elements and, despite the obvious supernatural elements, the film does not kowtow to incorporating serious religious elements. It’s a fantasy, folks, let’s treat it like that.

Yes I took a bit of time to get into the story. I have no idea what the references to light and beams and reflections were all about, but that’s okay with me. It’s an enjoyable film. And it’s beautiful to look at.
