Ed Felten's "Why Do Innovation Clusters Form"?

By Dennis D. McDonald

Ed Felten in the Freedom to Tinker blog has an interesting post called Why do Innovation Clusters Form? where he comments on a recent conference he attended devoted to high tech innovation and public policy.

He asks the question, why do “innovation clusters” form in some places but not in others? The prime example he gives is Silicon Valley. He discusses factors such as money, luck, and then he makes a few choice comments. My favorite is, “Thinking that patent lawyers cause innovation is like thinking that ants cause picnics.”

The comments to Felten’s posting make interesting reading as readers discuss the concept of innovation clustering. I threw in my own two cents, referring back to my recent post here titled Comparing Eras of Innovation: 1950’s Aerospace Advances and Today’s Web 2.0.
